In 1976 the small area that was named as the Karnali Wildlife Reserve with an area of only 368 sq. km. with the passing of time, people over 1500 families came to resettle in the area and government allowed them to do although the areas were protected. but in 1982 it was extended to include the Babai River Valley and renamed the Royal Bardia Wildlife Reserve. Now, The park covers an area of 968 sq. km. Bardia Wildlife Reserve was granted the status of a National Park in 1988. It was established to protect the ecosystems and conserve the tiger and other species of animals.
